Nacro, the crime reduction charity, today welcomed the speech by Rt. Hon Theresa May MP to the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, but called on the government to invest in the services which were needed to prevent a recurrence of the recent riots.
Graham Beech, strategic development director at Nacro, said:
‘The government needs to ensure that it doesn’t ignore the real solutions to ending youth crime and gang-related violence. We welcome the fact that the Home Office is putting together a gang violence reduction strategy, but it must contain a real commitment to funding the solutions to gang violence.
‘Young people in the hardest-to-reach communities are often ignored. Community services which can help tackle gang culture are under threat and the government needs to ensure that it continues to invest in the projects on the ground, rather than just printing words in Whitehall.
‘If the government fails to invest in the projects which tackle gang culture, then it will be unable to reduce reoffending, crime and the fear of crime.’
