ACPO lead on custody responds to annual IPCC statistics on deaths in police custody
ACPO lead on custody, Assistant Chief Constable Andy Adams said:
"Any death following detention in police custody is a tragedy. We are always keen to learn the lessons from such incidents and they are always referred to the IPCC for an independent assessment of our action as a matter of course. Individual forces receive IPCC reports on cases following an investigation and take the necessary and appropriate action.
“As the figures demonstrate some detainees enter custody with existing or emerging health problems. Officers and staff receive training and guidance on how to effectively identify and respond to such issues which they do extremely effectively in the vast majority of cases in what is sometimes a challenging and difficult operating environment."
