Catch22 had a great time at the Labour Party Conference where we took our messages about our Ready or Not campaign to a political audience.
Young people from Catch22’s Heywood Young Spirit led the way and spoke directly with MPs, councillors and opinion formers.
They were able to explain to politicians the barriers and challenges facing young people on their route to adulthood – but also how those barriers can be overcome with the right support and opportunities.
Catch22 staff and young people were able to talk to several MPs where we have services in their constituencies including Catherine McKinnell in Newcastle, Yvonne Fovargue In Makerfield and Meg Hillier in Hackney. We also got visits from shadow ministers Jack Straw, Vernon Coaker, David Hanson and Stephen Timms.
Catch22 Assistant Director of Communications, Pat Thompson, spoke at the Transition to Adulthood Alliance fringe event alongside new MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, Rushanara Ali MP. The event discussed alternatives to custody for young people and we promoted the use of restorative justice approaches and more support for young people on bail.
Finally, Catch22 won the award for most ‘youth friendly’ stand as voted for by young people! You can see the stand and some of the people we met in the media gallery on the right of your screen.
We're at the Conservative party conference this week, look out for us on stand number 48.
